Summary

"Folklore as an Historical Science" by George Laurence Gomme is a scholarly exploration into the connection between tales and the recorded past. This book aims to show how the stories and traditions passed down through generations offer clues about how people thought, acted, and lived long ago. Challenging common ideas, the author looks at how folklore can fill in missing pieces of history, covering details about regular life and important events that official documents might not mention. By studying traditions, like the tale of the "Pedlar of Swaffham," researchers can find deeper understandings of past societies and discover hidden truths within common stories.

About the Author

Sir George Laurence Gomme, FSA was a public servant and antiquarian. Two of his main interests were folklore and old buildings. He helped found both the Victoria County History and the Folklore Society, and persuaded the London County Council to administer the blue plaque commemorative scheme.
