Summary

"The Mistress of the Manse" by J. G. Holland is a story set in the 1800s about love and home life in the country. It follows Mildred and Philip, who are married and starting their life together. Philip shows Mildred their new house with lots of hope for the future. The book shows their happiness as they plan for a life of love, friendship, and maybe kids. However, Mildred feels unsure because she worries what others think of her as a pastor's wife. This hints at problems about being herself while also trying to fit her husband's dreams as the story looks at love, what men and women are expected to do, and staying true to yourself while fitting in with others.
