Summary

"An American" by Belle Willey Gue is a historical fiction set during the Spanish-American war, focusing on patriotism, human rights, and difficult wartime decisions. Ruth Wakefield experiences a life-changing journey in Cuba, where she experiences the grief from losing her parents but develops an important relationship with Father Felix. Her secret to a man wrapped up in political affairs tests her loyalties as she becomes involved in the movement to liberate political prisoners and stand with the Cuban people. Alongside Esther, the lover of one of the prisoners, Ruth goes on an exploration of love, devotion, and the heavy consequences of personal and political tension.
