"A Deal with the Devil" by Eden Phillpotts is a story set in the late 1800s about Daniel Dolphin, a man who lives to be one hundred years, and makes a strange bargain with the Devil for ten more years of life where he will grow younger instead of older; it follows his granddaughter, Martha, as she watches everything that happens because of this deal. At the beginning of the book, Daniel is a lively but not perfect character who has lived a really long life. During his birthday party, he tells everyone about a funny dream where the Devil offered to let him live ten more years if he gave him his soul. Martha worries about what might happen because of this mysterious deal. Everything changes even more when Daniel finds a written agreement that shows the deal is real, causing both him and Martha to feel shocked and a little scared.
