Summary

"Religious Poems, Part 1." by John Greenleaf Whittier is a compilation of religiously-themed poems created in the 1800s, an era defined by emotional expression and increasing interest in spiritual topics. As a noted American author and champion for equality, Whittier writes with intense feeling and a strong sense of right and wrong, frequently using stories from the Bible along with his own thoughts. The poems cover different parts of belief and ethics. One poem thinks about faith through the beauty of the world, while another paints a dramatic picture of Jesus' death and its lasting effects. Other poems cover looking inside oneself, group worship, and seeking calm, and through expressive images and emotional words, readers are encouraged to deeply consider their beliefs, life's puzzles, and the idea of God's kindness.
