Summary

"At Sundown, and other poems by John Greenleaf Whittier" is a collection of late 19th-century poems filled with observations on our world, the lives we lead, and important moments in history. Whittier’s poems explore themes like love, death, faith, and memory, showing how people are linked to the world around them. Some poems honor historical figures, like George Washington, and tell stories of human kindness, such as a sailor building a well. Other poems pay respect to fellow writers, celebrating their contributions to society. The poems carry a feeling of missing something while also praising the fleeting and lovely nature of life, encouraging readers to think about their own lives and what they believe in.
