Summary

"The Heart's Kingdom" by Maria Thompson Daviess is a story from the late 1800s about Charlotte Powers, a brave woman figuring out who she is and what people expect from her. Charlotte's story explores love, faith, and what happens when wanting to be yourself clashes with what society wants. After coming home from New York, Charlotte finds her dad has built a chapel in her garden, which makes her feel like religion is taking over her life. Talking with Nickols, who wants to be more than friends, and Reverend Goodloe, who is kind of mysterious, Charlotte wrestles with her worries about religion and starts to understand herself better; this sets the scene for complicated relationships and a fight between new ideas and old ways as she deals with the men who question what she thinks.
