Summary

"Jack in the Forecastle; or, Incidents in the Early Life of Hawser Martingale" by John Sherburne Sleeper tells the story of a young man named Hawser Martingale as he chases his dreams of sailing the open seas during the 1800s. After losing his parents, Hawser decides to become a sailor, despite not knowing much about ships or the ocean. His relative, Captain Tilton, questions whether Hawser is really cut out for the difficult life of a sailor. Hawser then sets sail on the brig Dolphin, where he quickly learns that being a sailor isn't always easy or glamorous as he comes face to face with seasickness and a rough crew. Even with these issues, Hawser gains knowledge, changes his mind about things, and gets ready for a voyage that will test him in ways he can't imagine.
