Summary

"The Passenger from Calais" by Arthur Griffiths is a captivating mystery rooted in early 20th-century Europe. It introduces Colonel Basil Annesley, whose ordinary train trip from Calais to Basle is upended by the entrance of the enigmatic Mrs. Blair, her child, and their maid. Mrs. Blair's obvious anxiety and vague history spark Annesley's curiosity even as he feels increasingly unsettled. Her worries hint at a hidden past and the reasons for her visible discomfort traveling with so few people. The suspense escalates with the introduction of a threatening character, Domenico Falfani, whose presence suggests a dangerous game as their journey continues, forcing Annesley to confront deception and the true nature of those around him.
