Summary

"Little Dinners With the Sphinx, and Other Prose Fancies" by Richard Le Gallienne presents a series of thought-provoking exchanges from the beginning of the 1900's. The book shares whimsical and philosophical chats between someone telling the story and a Sphinx character, covering topics like love, beauty, and what it means to be alive during fancy dinners. At the start, the storyteller and Sphinx meet again after a long separation. They have funny but deep talks about how they've changed, mixing jokes with feelings as they think about their past happy and sad moments. Their discussion also goes into philosophy, looking at the mysterious links between food and feelings. The storytelling style feels personal and clever, drawing readers into a world where smart talk and quiet feelings come together at the dinner table, getting ready to explore what it means to be human through the idea of eating.
