Summary

"Contrary Mary" by Temple Bailey is a romance novel where readers meet Mary Ballard, a determined young woman who dreams of freedom and real love while dealing with what her family expects of her in the early 1900s. The story tells of the bond between Mary and her new lodger, Roger Poole, a man trying to escape difficult memories, as they find themselves together within the walls of her family home and form a connection. Beginning with a wedding at a grand house atop a hill, we are introduced to the mysterious Roger Poole, who seeks to rent an apartment in the house. Mary Ballard, unlike the other guests, intrigues him, and their conversations reveal a spark. As they discuss renting the rooms, Mary's desire to be financially independent is evident, and Roger’s need for a new beginning is introduced, setting the scene for a love story mixed with Mary’s need for independence and the complication of her family’s expectations.
