Summary

"Joan of Arc of the North Woods" by Holman Day is a historical fiction novel set in the early twentieth century about Ward Latisan, a passionate young timber cruiser locked in a bitter conflict with the Comas Consolidated Paper Company. The story plunges into the Tomah timber country, where independent loggers fight for their survival against a powerful company trying to take over everything. Ward Latisan, a brave and honorable character, stands up to Rufus Craig, the corporation's director, and refuses to let him buy out the independent operations. Their confrontation brings up important ideas about loyalty, competition, and the challenges of making a living in the ruthless timber industry. Latisan's strong sense of family history and personal integrity drives him to challenge Craig's bullying strategies, which leads to a bigger fight for both their way of life and the land they depend on.
