Summary

"The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser: A Romantic Novel" by Aubrey Beardsley is a romance novel from the early 1900s about Tannhäuser, a knight who travels to Venus's world. It looks at wanting things, enjoying life, and how love and feeling sorry for your actions work together, using the fancy and strange images that Beardsley was known for. Tannhäuser gets lost in Venusberg, a magical place full of fun and is seduced by Venus. At first, he loves the fancy life and Venus's love, but he starts to feel guilty and decides to go to Rome to be forgiven. The story switches between showing the amazing court of Venus and Tannhäuser thinking about his problems. He's pulled between wanting earthly pleasures and wanting to be spiritually clean, and the novel teases apart the difficult parts of wanting things and the outcomes, creating a detailed mix of sexual feelings and thoughts about what love really means.
