Summary

"Poems of Adoration" by Michael Field is a compilation of religious poetry, likely created near the end of the 1800s, that dives into strong spiritual feelings and themes, such as love, loss, and faith. It captures what it meant to experience the divine as a human, showing a time when people were very interested in spirituality and things beyond the physical world. The poems look at the suffering of Christ, the importance of the Eucharist, and the respect for the Virgin Mary, stressing devotion and worship. Covering a wide array of spiritual and Christian ideas, the poems highlight the highs and lows of religious life, showing powerful moments like Christ's death and Mary's choice to accept her role. With vivid images and expressive language, Field draws readers into a thoughtful place to consider the wonders and spiritual side of life, encouraging a greater understanding of the acts of faith and love that shape a spiritual path.

About the Author

Michael Field was a pseudonym used for the poetry and verse drama of the English authors Katherine Harris Bradley and her niece and ward Edith Emma Cooper. As Field, they wrote around 40 works together, and a long journal Works and Days. Their intention was to keep the pen-name secret, but it became public knowledge, not long after they had confided in their friend Robert Browning.
