Summary

"The Half-Hearted" by John Buchan is a story set in the late 1800s, it takes place in the beautiful countryside of Glenavelin and tells the story of Lewis Haystoun, a young man back from traveling the world, who is trying to decide what to do with his life while dealing with his family and friends, like his aunt Lady Manorwater and the mysterious Alice Wishart; the book starts by showing the reader the stunning landscapes of Glenavelin and its people, as Lewis is driving through the glen on a rainy night, he meets his old friend Doctor Gracey, and they talk about how important it is to have a goal in life, then Alice Wishart shows up, excited to see her new home, and when she meets Lewis, you can tell that there's something special between them, which leads to a story about trying to find your place in the world, what society expects from you, and the importance of love and friendship.
