Speaking as a colonel in the Ninety-Second Illinois Volunteers, Atkins reflects back on the choices made and how they needlessly led to a tragic fight during the Civil War. The book looks at missed opportunities of the Union army and faults the leaders for not making better decisions that could have secured Chattanooga without so much bloodshed. Atkins points to poor planning as the reason for the immense losses on the Union side, and at the same time he praises the courage of the soldiers who fought.
