Summary

"Tales" by George Crabbe is a set of poetic stories from the late 1700s and early 1800s. These poems share different people's lives and problems in society using interesting people and life lessons. Crabbe's work often thinks about what it means to be human. The opening story, "The Dumb Orators," presents Justice Bolt, a lawyer who is well spoken and respected in his society. He desires strongly to impact the value of good behavior and citizenship. During a meeting he is publicly ridiculed by a group of citizens that are against his traditional ideals. Even with his reputation, he doubts himself when facing these citizens, wrestling with his concerns. Through the view of Justice Bolt's issues, Crabbe starts a deeper dive into the ideas of personalities and morals.
