"The Cruise of the Shining Light" by Norman Duncan is a story that follows a young boy named Dannie and his unusual uncle, Nicholas Top, in the early 1900s. Set in the coastal town of Twist Tickle, the book looks at what it means to be a family and who people really are, as Nick tries to teach Dannie about being a good person, even though Nick isn't perfect himself and has made mistakes in the past. We see how they live together, with both love and struggles, as Uncle Nick tries to show Dannie the right way to live, while also dealing with his own problems and feeling responsible for Dannie's future, which all happens in their beautiful but tough coastal home.
