Summary

"A Missionary Twig" by Emma L. Burnett is a children's story from the late 1800s about two young friends learning the value of donating to a mission. It all starts when Marty Ashford becomes curious about her friend Edith Howell's commitment to saving money for a blue box that goes to the missionaries. The story explores how ideas like compassion and good money-saving can play just as big of a role. Edith explains to Marty about the thought of giving ten percent of income to one's church which causes Marty to want to also contribute. After joining a local mission band they begin to learn about unfortunate children in faraway lands and the story follows as they journey into the world of giving and helping others.
