The Rapids

"The Rapids" by Alan Sullivan is a story from the early 1900s about a man named Robert Fisher Clark, who is full of energy and sure of himself and sees a way to bring new life to the little Canadian town of St. Marys. Robert arrives in St. Marys and immediately starts making plans to use the area's natural resources to build new industries. When Robert shares his ideas with townspeople, they are excited and want to see what's going to happen next. Robert meets with important people from St. Marys, like the mayor, and they talk about how his vision could change the town. He looks at the unfinished canal and imagines how he can turn St. Marys into a successful industrial center. The people of St. Marys don't know whether to believe him or not, but they are hopeful that his big plans might actually work, and everyone waits to see if Robert can really make St. Marys great again.
