Summary

"Notes on Witchcraft" by George Lyman Kittredge is a historical exploration into the beliefs surrounding witchcraft, especially in New England during the Salem Witch Trials setting. It argues that witchcraft wasn't just a strange quirk of Puritan society, but a common fear rooted in societal tensions impacting the world. The book kicks off by challenging the idea that New England colonists were weirdly different from Europeans, particularly in their magical beliefs. Rather, the book highlights that a belief in witchcraft was not unique to the time or place but had been expressed in various forms throughout history, and that the events of 1692 are best understood when viewed among all witch trials everywhere.
