Summary

"The World as Will and Idea (Vol. 3 of 3)" by Arthur Schopenhauer is a philosophical book that builds upon the author's earlier work to explore deep questions about will, intellect, and what is really real. It looks at how these ideas relate to our awareness, our lives, and what it means to be human, suggesting that will, not just thinking, is the driving force behind everything. The book starts by looking back at Schopenhauer's own thinking, clarifying that intellect is secondary to will, pointing out that many things happen naturally without any thinking involved. It argues that nature follows unconscious will, not conscious thought. The book questions previous philosophies, proposing that will and existence are deeply linked, while acknowledging that what we can know about the world is limited. This sets up later discussions about beauty, ethics, and the meaning of life, all based on the core idea of will as the foundation of our experiences.

About the Author

Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher. He is known for his 1818 work The World as Will and Representation, which characterizes the phenomenal world as the manifestation of a blind and irrational noumenal will. Building on the transcendental idealism of Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), Schopenhauer developed an atheistic metaphysical and ethical system that rejected the contemporaneous ideas of German idealism.
