Summary

"Sir Thomas More, or, Colloquies on the Progress and Prospects of Society" by Robert Southey is a book structured as a series of thought-provoking talks where the narrator, Montesinos, speaks with the spirit of Sir Thomas More about problems in society. The story launches with the narrator thinking about the nation's sadness over a princess's death, who then meets the ghost of More. Their discussions kick off with ideas about superstition and the belief in ghosts before moving to how society gets better. More shows his worries about people's morals, noting how quick changes can cause problems and how important careful progress is; the conversation then looks at the past and present to examine these important issues.

About the Author

Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions. Other romantics such as Byron accused him of siding with the establishment for money and status. He is remembered especially for the poem "After Blenheim" and the original version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
