"Kill Me If You Can!" by Randall Garrett is a science fiction story set on Apollyon, a planet controlled by a deadly tradition. Every five years, someone must try to assassinate the Autarch, the planet's ruler. The story follows Rad Bartol, who gets tricked into becoming a body double for the Autarch. Bartol is forced to play this role because of hypnosis, even though he knows it means his life is in danger. As assassins try to eliminate him and disorder breaks out in the Grand Palace, he uses his wits to break free from his role. Bartol uncovers a scheme involving the Autarch and the Peace Commander. The story ends with Bartol facing off against the person really in charge, who is the reason why Apollyon is ruled by fear. The book is full of suspense, action, and humor, and makes people think about power and who controls it.
