Summary

"The Heir: A Love Story" by V. Sackville-West is a novel that starts with the passing of Miss Chase and how it turns the life of her nephew, Peregrine Chase, upside down when he unexpectedly inherits the family's Blackboys estate. Suddenly, Chase has to deal with all the complicated parts of being an aristocrat and what people expect from him, even though his life was way different before. The story kicks off after Miss Chase dies, using a mix of funny dark moments and observations about society through the eyes of lawyers and Peregrine Chase, the new heir. As the funeral happens and the estate gets sorted out, the story looks at what Chase is feeling inside and how scared he is about taking on his new role. He feels like he's not good enough and is confused about who he is now and what's expected of him, all while he's getting to know the estate and its past. This mix of personal thoughts and how society works sets the scene for examining the big ideas of love, finding where you belong, and what it means to carry on a family's history.
