"Magic" by H. De Vere (Henry De Vere) Stacpoole is a tale set on a South Sea island, weaving together love, friendship, and bitter rivalry. Two inseparable friends, Tauti and Uliami, find their bond shattered when Tauti falls head over heels for Kinei. Unbeknownst to Tauti, Uliami also desires Kinei, setting the stage for jealousy and betrayal when Tauti and Kinei marry. The situation worsens when Kinei is unfaithful, turning the friends into enemies who seek each other's destruction. Sikra, Kinei's father, fans the flames of their conflict, driving them to join opposing ships with murder in their hearts. Their paths collide again in a distant city, but the story ends tragically with Tauti's death from fever, highlighting the destructive power of love and ambition.
