Summary

"Egotism in German Philosophy" by George Santayana explores the pitfalls of German philosophical thought. The book takes a critical look at renowned philosophers like Kant, Fichte, and Hegel, pointing out a tendency to put too much importance on individual ego, sometimes at the expense of shared values and objective reality. Santayana's writing reveals his doubts about the value of German philosophy, particularly its focus on subjective experience. He discusses how this focus can twist understandings of existence, and moral duty. By establishing this viewpoint, Santayana prepares readers for an analysis of how individualistic philosophies impact society's values.
