Summary

"The Divided Sabbath" by William Jowett is a passionate religious argument against opening the Crystal Palace on Sundays, fearing it would corrupt the Sabbath. Jowett voices concern about splitting the Sabbath between religious practices and secular entertainment, asserting that it threatens moral decline by tempting people away from sincere worship. He disputes that attending church in the morning justifies spending the rest of the day on leisure, arguing that such compromise would lead to spiritual and societal harm. Jowett's writing emphasizes the importance of preserving the Sabbath's sacredness, advocating regular family prayer and true worship as essential to the nation's spiritual health. He believes that allowing worldly amusements on Sundays would undermine religious values and negatively impact the nation's well-being.
