Summary

"Hedda Gabler" by Henrik Ibsen is a play set in the late 1800s about Hedda Tesman, a woman trapped in a new marriage and fighting against the boring life she now lives. The story looks at what society expects from people, the need for freedom, and the hidden troubles of its characters. It mainly follows Hedda's battle with what she wants versus what her marriage and society allow. The play starts with Miss Juliana Tesman and a servant, Berta, talking about Hedda and her husband, George Tesman, coming home from their honeymoon. George is excited about his studies, but Hedda shows she's not happy with her life as a wife. The talk brings up how proper she is and what people expect from her, and how she doesn't seem to care about anything around her. When Thea Elvsted shows up, it hints at a past relationship with Eilert Lovborg, suggesting he's important to the story. This sets the stage for the problems in Hedda's life as she struggles with her surroundings and her dreams.

About the Author

Henrik Johan Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director. As one of the founders of modernism in theatre, Ibsen is often referred to as "the father of realism" and the most influential playwright of the 19th century, as well of one of the most influential playwrights in Western literature more generally. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, and When We Dead Awaken. Ibsen is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and A Doll's House was the world's most performed play in 2006.
