Summary

"The Collected Works of Henrik Ibsen, Vol. 09" by Henrik Ibsen is a compilation of plays from the late 1800s that presents tricky relationships, social standards, and the inner workings of the human mind through interesting characters and detailed plots. A main idea is the freedom of people and moral problems in a society that's changing. "Rosmersholm" starts with Johannes Rosmer, a former religious leader, who is now living in his old family house, which is filled with sad memories. Rebecca West, the housekeeper, and Rector Kroll, Rosmer's brother-in-law, are also introduced, adding political stress to the story. A feeling of something bad about to happen is created as the characters think about how death has affected their lives and community. Their conversations bring up loyalty, social change, and the shadows of the past, hinting at future disagreements as Rosmer struggles with new ideas and the effects of his relationships with Rebecca and Kroll.

About the Author

Henrik Johan Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director. As one of the founders of modernism in theatre, Ibsen is often referred to as "the father of realism" and the most influential playwright of the 19th century, as well of one of the most influential playwrights in Western literature more generally. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, and When We Dead Awaken. Ibsen is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and A Doll's House was the world's most performed play in 2006.
