Summary

"The Collected Works of Henrik Ibsen, Vol. 02 (of 11)" by Henrik Ibsen is a selection of plays from the 1800s, showcasing his dramas "The Vikings at Helgeland" and "The Pretenders." These stories show us complicated people, how people are supposed to act in their society, and the battle between wanting power and doing what's right, all set in the world of Norse mythology. In "The Vikings at Helgeland," we start with an encounter between the Viking Sigurd and the chieftain Örnulf. The scene sets a serious mood with promises of peace and the knowledge of previous tensions. Sigurd's friendship with Gunnar, and Gunnar's strong wife Dagny, create a complicated network of relationships, especially with Hiördis, Örnulf's strong foster-daughter. The beginning hints at revenge, honor, and how past actions affect the characters as they deal with family in a tough, mythical environment.

About the Author

Henrik Johan Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director. As one of the founders of modernism in theatre, Ibsen is often referred to as "the father of realism" and the most influential playwright of the 19th century, as well of one of the most influential playwrights in Western literature more generally. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, and When We Dead Awaken. Ibsen is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and A Doll's House was the world's most performed play in 2006.
