Summary

"No Name" by Wilkie Collins is a gripping novel that throws readers into the lives of the Vanstone family and their two daughters, Norah and Magdalen, amidst 19th-century England. The narrative dives into the tricky question of identity, what society expects of people, and the battle between right and wrong, as these characters face their own inner struggles and long-held family secrets. Beginning in the peaceful countryside of Somersetshire, the quiet life of the Vanstone household, with the contrast between the calm Mr. Vanstone and the strict Miss Garth, is soon stirred by the lively Magdalen. Collins uses a blend of light-hearted moments and everyday life to give clues about the tensions brewing beneath the surface, teasing the huge changes that are about to happen because of a mysterious letter from New Orleans.

About the Author

William Wilkie Collins was an English novelist and playwright known especially for The Woman in White (1859), a mystery novel and early sensation novel, and for The Moonstone (1868), which established many of the ground rules of the modern detective novel and is also perhaps the earliest clear example of the police procedural genre.
