"Children of the Market Place" by Edgar Lee Masters is a story about James Miles, a young man born in London, who seeks to understand himself amidst family secrets and social changes. After the death of his mother at birth and a childhood spent with relatives, James discovers his father has died in America and decides to journey there to receive his inheritance. We are introduced to his complex family history and how the tragic story of his mom and the distant figure of his father shaped him. The journey sees him reflect and form himself as he travels by ship to New York, taking it all in and learning from others about what America means to him as he sees its society and wrestles with the morality of slavery. James's quest soon transforms into a confrontation with his father's history and the difficulties of making a life for himself in a growing America.
