Summary

"The History of John Bull" by John Arbuthnot is a funny tale that uses the character John Bull to stand for the people of England back in the 1700s. He is shown as an honest, but easily tricked, businessman who struggles with the confusing world of politics and how people get along. The story looks at themes like getting caught up in legal problems, tricky political plans, and what makes a country its own, especially when it comes to things happening around the Peace of Utrecht. At the beginning, we meet the people involved in John Bull's problems with the law and in society, including his envious business partners, Nic. Frog and Lewis Baboon, which is the start of the story about lawsuits between Bull and others over business and position. The story is capturing the worries of the time about being loyal, family connections, and who you support in politics. Through interesting storytelling, Arbuthnot draws a picture of society and politics, highlighting the main character's frustrations as he deals with his good and bad luck in this funny but smart look at English life in the early 1700s.
