The Peace of Roaring River

"The Peace of Roaring River" by George Van Schaick is a story set in the wilderness that follows Hugo Ennis, a young man with dreams of building a life for himself, and Madge Nelson, a city girl running from her past. The story begins with Hugo arriving in the village of Carcajou, ready to build a log cabin while being pursued by an unwanted suitor. Madge, seeking escape, answers a matrimonial advertisement. The contrast between city and wilderness sets the stage for the pair's struggles, hopes, dreams, and eventual meeting, revealing themes of love and new beginnings in a harsh, untamed land.
