Summary

"Joel: A Boy of Galilee" by Annie F. Johnston is a historical tale about a special young boy named Joel, living long ago during the time of Jesus. As a child in Galilee, Joel has a hard time because of his disability, a twisted leg, and dreams of revenge for how his childhood tormentor treated him. He often feels alone as he watches other kids play and wishes he could join them. This book shows us what life was like back then and how Joel’s life changes as he watches amazing things happen, witnessing miracles performed by Jesus, and his interactions with Rabbi Phineas. The story focuses on how Joel deals with his challenges, learns about kindness, and starts to find a way to forgive others, choosing compassion as he grows.
