Summary

"The Daughter of a Republican" by Bernie Babcock is a story set in a time when society had clear class differences, and it follows two families whose lives are very different, highlighting their difficulties and how drinking too much alcohol affects them. The story begins with the Crowley family, especially Maggie who must face tough times in her life. Later in the novel, the reader is introduced to the Thorn family, and Judge Thorn's daughter, Jean, who is courageous and wants to make a positive change in her community. As the story starts, the reader learns of the Crowley family, living in poverty during the winter time. With the mother sick, the children, and especially Maggie, must care for her and find their father, who is often gone because of his issues with alcohol. The beginning of the story has a sad tone, presenting the tough situations they must face. We are also presented with Judge Thorn and his daughter, Jean, who seems smart and mindful of community and social issues, like stopping alcohol consumption and protecting women's rights.
