Summary

"The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri is an expansive poem from the 1300s. The story is separated into three sections, and this part, "Purgatorio," tells about a trek through a place called Purgatory. Dante is the main character and he goes on a life-changing trip with Virgil, a poet from Rome, through different afterlife levels aiming for divine favor. The story starts with Dante leaving the bad place in Hell and arriving in Purgatory where souls become pure to enter Heaven. Virgil takes on the job of guiding Dante through this realm where they come across different spirits seeking forgiveness for the bad things they did when they were alive. As they move up the Purgatory mountain, they run into spirits who narrate their histories and ponder on their past lives, conveying their challenges and desires for forgiveness providing an opening for a story of development, moral thought, and the search for God's absolution.
