"Oowikapun, or, How the Gospel Reached the Nelson River Indians" by Egerton Ryerson Young is a historical story about spiritual change and cultural meetings during the 1800's. The story follows Oowikapun, an Indigenous hunter whose life dramatically shifts after he is injured by a wolf. While recovering, he meets Memotas, a Christian Indian, who shares new ideas about faith and respect. Oowikapun is especially struck by Memotas's kind treatment of his family, which differs greatly from Oowikapun’s own traditions. As Oowikapun wrestles with these new teachings, the book explores the big differences between cultures and the impact of missionaries trying to spread their beliefs among Indigenous communities.
