Summary

"Beautiful Birds" by Edmund Selous is a captivating exploration of the avian world, shining a light on the spectacular beauty of birds and the tragic threats they face. The book opens with vibrant descriptions of birds like the Kingfisher and Thrush, celebrating their unique colors and characteristics and drawing a distinction of their beauty to those of butterflies. The story then pivots to the grim reality of how humanity's demand for ornamentation leads to the cruel hunting and destruction of these creatures, particularly Birds of Paradise, spurring a call for conservation. With Nature portrayed almost as a character, the narrative gently urges readers to recognize the ethical implications of our actions and to foster compassion, especially among those who unknowingly contribute to this destruction through fashion choices.

About the Author

Edmund Selous was a British ornithologist and writer. He was the younger brother of big-game hunter Frederick Selous. Born in London, the son of a wealthy stockbroker, Selous was educated privately and matriculated at Pembroke College, Cambridge in September 1877. He left without a degree and was admitted to the Middle Temple just over a year later and was called to the bar in 1881. He practised as a barrister only briefly before retiring to pursue the study of natural history and literature.
