Summary

"Ghosts: A Domestic Tragedy in Three Acts" by Henrik Ibsen is a play set in late 19th-century Norway, where Mrs. Alving's home becomes the stage for a drama about hidden truths and societal expectations. The story centers on Mrs. Alving, burdened by her late husband's reputation; her son Oswald, an artist back from Paris; and Pastor Manders, who represents old-fashioned values. As the play begins, we find Regina Engstrand, a servant, dealing with her father, Engstrand. The arrival of Pastor Manders and the discussion of the orphanage built to honor Mrs. Alving’s husband start peeling back layers of secrets. The play examines the repercussions of sins passed down through generations and the hypocrisy of society through tense interactions and revelations, with the dreary, rain-soaked setting mirroring the characters' internal suffering and the dark secrets that threaten to consume them.

About the Author

Henrik Johan Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director. As one of the founders of modernism in theatre, Ibsen is often referred to as "the father of realism" and the most influential playwright of the 19th century, as well of one of the most influential playwrights in Western literature more generally. His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, Emperor and Galilean, A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck, Rosmersholm, Hedda Gabler, The Master Builder, and When We Dead Awaken. Ibsen is the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and A Doll's House was the world's most performed play in 2006.
