Summary

"Pausanias, the Spartan; The Haunted and the Haunters" by Edward Bulwer Lytton Lytton is an unfinished historical romance that plunges into the life of Pausanias, a Spartan Regent, as he grapples with the slippery slopes of power and morality amidst the ancient Greek world. We first meet Athenian leaders witnessing Pausanias' descent into opulence, a stark contrast to his former honor, sparking concern and ambition in Athens. The heart of the story beats with themes of rivalry and doomed love, especially Pausanias' bond with Cleonice, complicated with suggestions of eerie supernatural forces that cast a shadow over their fates. This sets the scene for a drama rich in political strategy, personal battles, and the grim aftermath of unchecked desires and goals.
