"Paul Clifford — Volume 01" by Edward Bulwer Lytton is a story set in the 1800s about Paul Clifford, whose life starts in the rough parts of London. The author wants to look at problems in society like crime and how people are punished, and also how a person's childhood can change how they see right and wrong. The story starts with a woman named Judith, who is dying and worried about her son, Paul. She leaves Paul with Mrs. Margery Lobkins, because Judith is worried about raising him in a bad place. Paul grows up with Mrs. Lobkins and deals with his strange family and the dangers of living on the streets. He wants to learn and be somebody important, but the things around him might lead him down a bad path, setting up a future that is sure to be rocky.

About the Author

Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton,, was an English writer and politician. He served as a Whig member of Parliament from 1831 to 1841 and a Conservative from 1851 to 1866. He was Secretary of State for the Colonies from June 1858 to June 1859, choosing Richard Clement Moody as founder of British Columbia. He was created Baron Lytton of Knebworth in 1866.
