The book tells the real story of a trip to the South Seas, especially how the crew tried to take ships and treasures from the Spanish. Betagh wants to set the record straight, because he thinks the captain of the trip, George Shelvocke, lied about what really happened, particularly regarding the ships "Success" and "Speedwell." Betagh, who was in charge of the soldiers on the "Speedwell," writes about disagreements between the officers, especially problems with Shelvocke. He believes Shelvocke made bad choices that hurt the trip. To prove his side, Betagh uses diaries and stories from people who were there, hoping to show the truth and fix the bad reputation he feels Shelvocke unfairly gave to the crew.
