Summary

"The Translation of a Savage, Volume 1" by Gilbert Parker, is a story from the late 1800's about Frank Armour, a man from a fancy English family, who stirs up drama when he marries Lali, a native Indian woman from the Hudson's Bay area. This sets up the story to consider big ideas around race, culture, and how families work, especially when Frank's family has a hard time accepting Lali and what their marriage means for them in society. After a bad breakup, Frank marries Lali on a whim, and now he must deal with the fallout, including how his family reacts. As Lali gets ready to come to Greyhope, everyone is curious and judgmental; her arrival is going to shake things up for Frank's proper British family, throwing everything they know into question.
