Summary

"Mortomley's Estate: A Novel. Vol. 2 (of 3)" by J. H. Riddell is a story set in the late 1800s that explores the difficulties of the Mortomley family as they face financial collapse. The novel begins in an atmosphere of dread, focusing on Mrs. Mortomley's efforts to maintain order at Homewood while her husband's sickness and bankruptcy cause chaos. As characters like Rupert worry about the future and Mr. Dean shows contempt for those who have fallen on hard times, the story becomes more complicated. Mrs. Mortomley experiences tremendous grief as themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the painful truth of social decline are revealed against a backdrop of talks over responsibility and societal norms, especially when faced with the imminent loss of her family's estate.
