Summary

"The Honor of the Big Snows" by James Oliver Curwood is a story set in the tough, wild lands of northern Canada and it examines love, survival, and dealing with loss. Readers meet John Cummins, a solitary hunter deeply in love with his wife, Mélisse, who is very sick. Their strong connection is shown in their loving moments and deep conversations as Mélisse nears the end of her life. She brings up music, which makes John think about their beautiful life together and the quiet prayers of their community. A hungry young boy named Jan Thoreau arrives with a violin, playing sad music as Mélisse passes away, connecting their lives in a shared moment of sadness and cultural respect making the opening chapter full of strong feelings and the harsh realities of life in snowy setting.
