Summary

"The Educated Negro and His Mission" by W. S. Scarborough is a thought-provoking essay from 1903 that tackles the vital topic of education for African Americans during a period of intense racial challenges and social change in the United States. It examines the significant role and purpose of educated Black individuals within their communities and in society at large, emphasizing their duty to elevate their race through knowledge, leadership, and dedicated service. Scarborough champions the importance of higher learning and calls for a well-rounded education that combines practical skills with academic pursuits, believing that real progress needs both. The essay discusses that limiting education to only vocational training is harmful, instead claiming that promoting Black scholarship is essential for the race's advancement, highlighting how educated people can motivate and guide their communities, tackle moral and social problems, and actively participate in politics, ultimately shaping a brighter future for African Americans.
