Summary

"Colonial Expeditions to the Interior of California Central Valley, 1800-1820" by Sherburne Friend Cook is a historical exploration of the early 1800s, detailing Spanish-Mexican expeditions into California's Central Valley. Cook centers on the relationships between colonizers and natives, emphasizing experiences taken from diaries and reports. The narrative starts by recognizing what we already know about California's Indigenous people through archeology and cultural studies. Though a lot is known about the mission's, this work tells the story of the expeditions and the native people in their own land. The goal is to use accounts from that time to better understand native life, their opposition to colonial advances, and how these travels affected their groups forever.
