Summary

"The Works of Lord Byron. Vol. 4" by George Gordon Byron is a compilation of poems from the early 1800s, presenting the author’s diverse work between 1816 and 1821; it reveals a deep look into human feelings, freedom, and confinement. Byron's transformation through his time in Switzerland and Italy is showcased through the famous poem, "The Prisoner of Chillon." Inspired by François Bonivard, a real prisoner held at the Château de Chillon for standing against injustice, the narrative portrays themes of suffering and the strong human desire for freedom, as the prisoner shares his experiences of isolation, the deaths of his brothers, and the emotional connection they shared; and finally, the mental impacts of despair through imagery and lyrical style.

Among his best-known works are the lengthy narratives Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; many of his shorter lyrics in Hebrew Melodies also became popular.
